Princely India was way ahead of Euro. What is your views on the following news in to-day's Indian express?
CHENNAI: Centuries before the launch of the Euro — the common currency of the European Union, 16 princely states in ancient India had a common currency in the sixth century BC, historians say. Displaying 373 silver punch-marked coins from Vaigainallur, a village in Karur district in Tamil Nadu at the Government Museum here, historians said the coins — found in regions spanning from the Himalayas to Cape Comorin in the Indian sub-continent — could have served as a uniform currency of ancient India. Dr T S Sridhar, commissioner of museums, and N Sundarajan, curator, numismatics division, said the coins — unearthed from land belonging to a man, Jayaraman, in 2008 — revealed trade ties between Sangam-age Tamils and the Mauryan empire. http://www.expressbuzz.com/edition/story.aspx?Title=Princely+India+was+way+ahead+of+Euro&artid=KnZwGNzHNS4=&SectionID=lifojHIWDUU=&MainSectionID=lifojHIWDUU=&SEO=European+Union,Government+Museum&SectionName=rSY|6QYp3kQ=

- A deep and dispassionate study of ancient Indian culture would reveal that in agriculture, astronomy, health sciences (including surgicals), arts and literature, the people were far ahead of other civilizations in the globe. Harvey who found that blood 'circulated' in the body, ten years after demise of Shakespeare (who strangely depicts Brutus - in Juleus Caesar - as saying to his wife, 'you are as dear to me as are the ruddy drops that VISIT my sad heart.." implying the flow of blood till then thought to be stagnant in the body). But we find the surgical methods / organ transplants (explained in Susrutha samhitha or something) being done much earlier in India. Nehru writes in his Discovery of India (ch: Vedic Age) "there is an odd and interesting reference in one of the upanishads.." that when we think the sun is set, it goes to give day to the other part of earth (quote partial as I do not remember exact words in the book, but put the content only). So the knowledge of science, arts, administration, martial arts etc were all well developed in this part of the world long long before.
- Our Indus Vally Civilization can still teach a thing or two the present day modern world. IVC also had its own currency, and that was thousands of years back than the present find.
