What made the British to offer Independence to India?

I can't seem to find info on what 'made' India achieve Independence. I know that Mahatma Gandhi won it by encouraging people to hand spin & weave thier own fabric && make thier own salt by collecting water from the Indian ocean. But what really made the British offer Independence?

1. World war 2... Britain could no longer afford an empire after it. So they granted independence to nearly all of their colonies.
