  1. I can't answer your question, but I have a comment. What was Great Britain doing to the colonies that made us want our freedom? No country wants to be ruled by a government too far away to even care about, much less address, their needs. King George III could have cared less about the high price of tea and the taxes that we were paying on it. He just wanted the money. And so we revolted. We fought the British and won our independence--and then had to do it again in the war of 1812. Why? Because our freedom was THAT important to us. Many men and women and fought for and died for this great country of ours, and they will continue to do so in the name of liberty. I can only imagine that the reasons were pretty much the same with India. It was/is a big country being ruled by a little nation. Indeed, why?
  2. Well your answer depends on certain factors. Let me break it for you. 1) Tribal people revolted because Britishers took their long culture of forest vegetation. They used to cultivate the land in groups and then divide their food. Britishers put a stop on this type of cultivation. Secondly they were being converted into Christianity. This was an attack on their 2000 year old gods. This led them to revolt. 2) Peasantry revolted due to the high taxes and zamindari system Before that peasant used to deal direct with the government and tell them about their grievances.Britishers introduced middle man(zamindar or landlord) who was oppressive towards peasants. Earlier, if there was famine , kings reduced the taxes and even give food from their buffer to people. Britishers did the opposite. They were only interested in money , so for them famine doesn't make a difference. They gave all the power to landlords , who make them serfs if tax is not paid. Peasants' fight was directly against the landlords , and afterwards against British as British policy was the root cause. Britishers used to treat them like their slaves. 3) Middle class revolted due to excise duties and restriction on jobs. Most of the jobs were reserved for Britishers. Also indians had to pay tax on the goods manufactured in their own country while British companies were exempted from it. Also, Britishers restricted indians from restaurants and specific places. Also britishers used to do a little for the development of country. 4)Upper middle class revolted due to oppressive economic policies. All the wealth was drained from india to britain. All the war costs were being put on to india. Upper middle class,, which were before respected people and ministers were treated like dogs. They were being made to eat non veg , which is against their religion. Kings were made to come and watch their polo matches. No indian was allowed representation in government. British Act of 1912(not sure about date) provided only 10% representation to indians and that too with various conditions. Above all of this was the economic policy of britishers. Their policy was to extract maximum money through taxes. India was like a market for them . They used to forcfully sell their products to indians and restricted from all the jobs and ultimately stopped their progress. Ghandhi was upset at seeing the condition of common person. Think about a common person. he is not allowed to go everywhere in his own country. Law is for protection of Britishers. Each case goes in White man's favor. People were burdened with taxes. Famines were frequent. There was no education or job for his son. Whenever he walks on road , he is in constant fear of meeting a white man and humiliated by him. How will he react. There was anger in him which ghandhi channeled into a movement. There were some incidents which changed life of ghandhi. 1) In south africa, he was going in a train. A white man came and asked him to leave the compartment. When Ghandhi revolted he was thrown out of train 2) Ghandhi went to a restaurant and thrown out of there. 3) He was walking on road. Some white man came and started abusing him. IF you want specific incidents of Britishers' oppressiveness , here they are :- 1) Around 6000-7000 gathered in a garden (Jalianwala bagh) in 1919 for a peaceful meeting.British general Dyer came and started firing without any warning. More than 1000 people were killed. 2) They killed more that 3000 moplah people for not paying taxes due to a famine. There are many other incidents. If you want a detail of all incidents and a list of important events mail me at cooldj4u12@yahoo.com. I will have to compile and then provide it to you. http://einsteinreborn.blogspot.com/search/label/India
  3. am an indian...i can answer ur question i think.....i wont give u links of evidence to what i say coz you can find it out from the internet very easily. 1. Limited freedom. i know you want substantial evidence...but just on an emotional level u gota say thats not fair. 2. In the geneva convention , during WW2, the western countries recognized the right to live in freedom and equality for every country in he world but not India ( and other british colonies i think). 3. Search the 'jallianwaala bagh' in google. It was a tragedy where many people had gathered in the garden in the city of 'amritsar'. It was a peaceful protest gathering, the people were protesting against the arrest if certain freedom fighters. General Dyer came along to the garden along with 50 of his armed men. The garden had only 1 exit, they blocked it and fired indiscriminately for 5 minutes......At the end, approx 1000 people were killed and 2000 injured....the people killed included oldmen, woman and children....though official records say only 400 were killed....but thats the official record prepared by the british, indian gov estimates say 1000 were killled. Many people jumped into a veryyyyy veryyy deep well in order to avoid getting shot. hundreds drowned in the well. I have visited the place personally, seen photos of bodies strewn in the garden....the holes created by teh thousands of bullets on the walls of the garden are STILL visible. 4. Discriminatory rules. The Indian people were treated worse than animals. Everywhere you go, there were different rules and lines for indian people and the brits. In cinema halls, there was a section for the brits and another section where only indian people sat, the sign infront of the section of the brits read "indians and dogs not allowed"....... 5. A leader of our movement--'lala lajpat rai' who was participating in a peaceful protest against a commission called 'simon commission' was charged with batons by police men on horses....he was in his 70s.....the brits rained down cane after cane on the old men's head.....he bled to death. 6. In the city of shimla ( and various other cities) There were a higher road for the brits to walk on and a lower road for the indians to walk on as representation of the brits superiorty. 7. Google the following : 'cellular jail', 'andaman'. It was a penal settlement where the indian political prisoners ( read : freedom fighters) were sent for demanding the freedom of their own country. The conditions there wud make alcatraz look like heaven....it was thousands of miles away from the mainland......out in the sea. The prisoners there were used to turn around machinery to generate coconut oil, a work normally done by BULLS and BUFFALOES. They were given 'stuff' made from grass to eat and lentin which were overflowing with all sorts of cockroaches and insects......The cells were not 6-7 feet in length wthout any ventilation. They were brutally beaten up every other day. No visitor was allowed on the island and so noone came to know of the plight of the prisoners. There ws a freedom fighter ( sorry forgot his name) he refused to work saying that it was for animals and not human beings, he was beaten till he was unconscious....when he regained consciousness, he was made to stand in the stiffling sun for 4 straight days till he got 104 degrees fever , then he was taken out and returned to his cell.....the next day he was beaten up again......he was tortured till he became insane. Many prisoners went on hunger strike--what did they demand?--only better clothes and food and some books. The ywere tortured. One method of torture to end the hunger strike was 20-25 policemen used to mercilessly beat up each prisoner, while the ther 20 something guards beat the poor guy , one guys used to try to put a tube inside his nose.....they used to put milk inside his body through the nasal cavity and into the food pipe in order to break down their hungr strike.....many times the milk went into the air-pipe nd they died....Another method was beating them mercilessly and inserting objects into the rectum, sometimes even hands.....I have visited the jail personally too...its a national heritage site now, in port blair, andaman islands. 8. There ws seperate class for travelling for indians and british. 9.even seperate laws.....british prisoners who had committed rape and mrder could be seen enjoying and drinking fresh fruit juice in the morning and reading newspapers in their freshly washed prison uniforms......while the indian guys were not allowed to change their uniforms for 4 yrs...they wre made t oeat food not worth eating by a animal. Sorry cud only think of these...hope it helped... message me or email me if you want any other help.
