1839-1842 - The Opium Wars The western world, especially the British, had become angrier at the present lack of trade with China. Westerners wanted more silk and porcelain. This drove the British to find other ways to increase trade with China. What they did was to do their trading with China THROUGH India. The Chinese would accept any trades through India. The two biggest imports INTO China from Britain were cotton and opium. Although opium was illegal in China, corrupt politicians and traders were able to bring in large amounts of opium into China. This created opium addicts among the Chinese. Like any drug that is addictive, the more you use the drug, the more you want. The Chinese government decided it had had enough of this drug and took measures to stop the importing of opium into their country. They seized the illegal drug from corrupt Chinese merchants. They went into foreign communities that were living in their country and took and destroyed their property. The British
