Where is the best place to get the history of shipping and international trade as related to ocean voyaging?

I'm specifically interested in what route a ship would've taken from the east coast of the U.S. to three different places: India, China and Africa. The time frame I'm interested in is between 1870-1900. I don't mean that all of the three places need to be reached in the same trip.
